C&K ELUA (Part 8)
ELUA. Cee and I had a lot of songs to contribute to our next album. Other than the 66 cent disaster, we managed to pick ourselves up and move forward. Bill Thompson(our personal manager) kept us focused and due to the success of the first album Columbia wanted a second album.
Things were starting to catch on and we were touring for 6 months all over the mainland. Opening for Big acts traveling sometimes 600 miles a day by Van from gig to gig. Going home was a short two weeks and then off for another 6 months. We were young and excited about how things were going, so touring was part of living the dream.
Well, we managed to get a few weeks off the road to focus on our second album. “You and Me”, “Summer Lady”, “6 O’clock Bad News”, “I Am The Other Man”, “Someday”, “Highway In The Sun”, “Railway Station”, “Home(And I’m Staying This Time)”, “About You”, “Goodnight and Good Morning.” Most of these songs were songs we were singing at Rainbow Villa. “Railway Station” was written by Chucky Souza my close friend from Punahou. It was about his travels to Europe and we loved the song and asked if we could record it. We had fun with it.
“Highway in the Sun” was written on our trip from L.A. to San Francisco, between Ventura and Santa Barbara. Some of you heard the story before.
“6 O’clock...” was written about and old man watching the news and swearing about how screwed up the World was. It was nothing then compared to today. He would of had a heart attack with how the World is today. That song seems to fit right in with today’s craziness.
“Goodnight and Good Morning” was written by Hall and Oates. This was a cover song suggested by the record company. We were both fans of Hall and Oates, so it was a no brainer. We just had to make it a C&K song and I guess we did cuz everyone thought we wrote it. Great song!!!
Let me just touch on one more song, “About You.”
Our second album was recorded at Producers Workshop. Our producer was a hot young guy named David Kershenbaum who produced Tracy Chapman, Joe Jackson, Laura Branigan, Bryan Adams, Supertramp, Cat Stevens, Tori Amos and Cecilio and Kapono to name a few. We recorded “About You” at Producers Workshop and it turned out really good, but David, our produce, said he thought of another hot keyboardist that he’d like to have play Grand piano on this song. We went with it and we went to another studio in Burbank and we met David Paich, the founder and keyboardist for ToTo. Well, as good as the song already was David’s playing was MAGIC!!! Cee and I looked at each other and knew then and there that that would be a HIT!!! And the rest is history. ELUA was born.
The album cover was shot at the Los Angeles Observatory and when asked what would be the title we went Hawaiian...“ELUA” meaning two or second or in our case two of us. We were proud of this album and the musicians were a mix of L.A.’s BEST!!!
Hey thanks for tuning in and look for next TBT. If you’re liking these throwbacks turn your friends on to it. I always say “the more the merrier!!!” Have a beautiful Aloha night!!! Henry
